Continuing Paramedic Education

ACAP is now entering its second year of hosting regular and comprehensive education events for members. Our regular Tuesday night Rozelle sessions have proven to be a big hit, with many attendees commenting on the quality and practical application of the presentations.

We encourage all members to take up the opportunities provided by these regular events. They not only expand your knowledge, introduce you to new pre-hospital technologies and allow for peer interaction, but also count towards your CTP!

To book for an event, head over to our Education page and follow the links. For more information email the education coordinator..

The current education events are as follows:

Austrauma 2008

This year Emergency Surgery will be included with Trauma and Critical Care. The international world renown faculty is confirmed and will be coming to Australia from the United States, South Africa, Israel and New Zealand. There will also be Australian expertise with trauma and emergency care leaders from almost every State.

Conference highlights include disaster management, difficult emergency surgery decision making, advances in burns care, damage control in and out of the abdomen, controversial debates, trauma care pitfalls, surgical ICU's, trauma centre designation and verification, teams and leadership, operative and non-operative care principles and urban vs rural case scenarios.

Due to last year's oversubscription and success of the workshop sessions, Austrauma 2008 will dedicate a separate day exclusively for Emergency Workshops in Burns, Prehospital Skills, Emergency Room Airways and Ultrasound.

Check the website regularly for the new program, updates and details.

Nationally ACAP has also recently launched the exciting 'eJournal of Emergency Primary Health Care' (JEPHC), a peer reviewed e-journal available internationally via the internet. Check out the JEPHC page for articles and submission information.

ACAP Trials New Intubation Technology

The Airtraq device

ACAP (NSW) and Charles Sturt University, under the guidance of Professor Malcolm Woollard, are undertaking a randomised cross over trial comparing a conventional laryngoscope and the AirtraqTM in intubation. Participants for the mannequin trial will be sourced from the upcoming ACAP National Conference in Adelaide.

Professor Malcolm Woollard is the Director of the Faculty of Pre-hospital Care Research Unit in the Department of Academic Emergency Medicine at the James Cook University Hospital and Visiting Professor in Pre-hospital Emergency Care at the University of Teesside. He was formerly a Lecturer-Practitioner at the University of Wales Swansea and an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Wales College of Medicine, where he led the establishment of the Pre-hospital Emergency Research Unit. Professor Woollard commenced his career as an ambulance officer and paramedic. ACAP (NSW) is part sponsoring Professor Woollard in Australia under the recent Scholarship Grants Program expansion.

Results of the trial will be published in an appropriate international journal and will also be published in the Response journal.
