Medexchange Information
The aim of the program is to promote the professional development of our staff and to foster new ideas within our service, and establish working relationships with our Host Services. The program is open to both uniform and non-uniform staff.

To date we have had Medexchange Recipients visit Emergency Services in Israel, USA, Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, UK, Vietnam, New Zealand, Findlay as well as several Ambulance Services within Australia.

The Medexchange Program is conducted with the support of the Ambulance Service of NSW, with the Service providing three (3) weeks paid Special Leave thus enabling the successful applicant to visit the designated country or service and the Australian College of Ambulance Professionals providing return airfares to the chosen destination.

In previous years the ACAP Medexchange Program has received generous support from the Ambulance Service of NSW Board, through the provision of a financial grant of $2500 per annum for a period of five years.

The host Emergency Service in the selected Medexchange location is generally responsible for the provision of accommodation and transport whilst our Medexchange recipient is visiting their Service. In return we offer to host a member of their service here in NSW.

It is a requirement of the Medexchange Program that the successful applicant present a comprehensive written report on their Medexchange visit within a month of their return, as well as an audio visual report to the Ambulance Service and ACAP Boards. The written report is to be of professional standard and will be published in the ACAP Response Journal.

To be awarded a Medexchange Scholarship the applicant is required to:

  • Submit a written application of 2500 words or greater setting out their reason for application and the perceived benefits to the Service and ACAP
  • The Medexchange Committee appraises all applications and once culled the short listed applicants are required to attend an interview and make a 10-minute presentation to the committee.
  • The Medexchange Committee completes a performance appraisal on each interviewee and decides upon the successful applicant.

The Medexchange Committee comprises the Committee Chairperson or their nominee, General Manager of Operations - Ambulance Service of NSW and one other person (usually an independent).

The successful applicant will be advised and presentation of awards arranged. It should also be noted that the exchange is to be conducted within 12 months of receiving the scholarship.

Note: All applicants must have a valid Australian or suitable passport at the time of application.
