Society of Ambulance Paramedic Students

What SOAPS  is all about
SOAPS is the representative student body for all Ambulance Paramedic students in Western Australia. The society works at both an educational and social level to assist, direct, represent and connect the various student year groups and study modes across the state.

In a day-to-day setting, the role of SOAPS is fairly straightforward: it's a complete support and communication hub for those who need it, helping out on all levels- from trivial sticking points such as buying and selling second-hand books or university enrolment to organising social gatherings and facilitating regular Professional Development Seminars. On a broader scale, SOAPS is also a body that is able to represent the unity of Ambulance Paramedic students at the University committee and industry level.

Finally, but definitely most importantly, SOAPS is dedicated to raising funds on an annual basis for a designated charity. In 2008, that charity is the Cerebral Palsy Foundation of Australia. Hopefully we will be able to make a significant, positive difference to those in need!

Who runs SOAPS?

SOAPS is overseen by an elected committee of students representing first, second and third year. Traditionally, the day-to-day running of the Society have been placed into the eager hands of first year students at the Edith Cowan University Joondalup campus. This group is generally in contact more regularly and are able to use the resources of the university to the society's benefit. There is also active interaction with and participation from University and industry staff such as Dr. Richard Brightwell, Head of School for the Paramedical Science Degree.

Why join SOAPS?
Whilst SOAPS is generally most beneficial for those studying Paramedical Science, membership of the society is open to anyone interested in the profession and the benefits we provide. As an example, we currently have a number of very active members who are studying Biomedical Science, Nursing and Sports Sciences- all of whom are either interested in becoming a Paramedic or the Professional Development seminars we hold.

Annual membership for SOAPS is a measly $10- all of which is contributed to the running and funding of SOAPS events and ensuring that the student body receives the best support possible. We currently have more than 50 active members- a number that is growing from week-to-week.

For the annual fee of $10, all SOAPS members receive:

  • Full access to the SOAPS online forum - a major communication centre for everything to do with paramedic study, university life, social functions and everything else you can think of
  • A fantastic SOAPS stubby holder
  • Regular professional development seminars from highly respected industry experts (Ie:  The Mental Health Law Institute, operational Paramedics, etc)
  • Weekly discussion meetings to voice ideas, concerns or to simply to make sure everyone is on the same page
  • A fantastic support network of fellow students, university staff and professionals
  • A discounted SOAPS shirt
  • The chance to meet plenty of great, inspiring people
