The Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics is proud to congratulate Professor Andrew Blakers on his appointment as an Officer of the Order of Australia on 26 January 2025 for his "distinguished service to science in the field of solar cell development, and as an advocate for energy storage and renewable technologies".
Professor Blakers is well recognised as a global leader and pioneer in solar PV technology. He is Co-inventor of the commercially viable Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) Silicon Solar Cell Technology that is used in around 90% of solar installations across the world.
Professor Blakers is also: Co-inventor of the sliver solar cell; Lead Developer of the Global Atlas of Pumped Hydro Energy Storage; and Leader of 100% Renewable Energy Futures Research group.
Since 2022 he has been Emeritus Professor, ANU College of Engineering, Computing and Cybernetics. Professor Blakers has authored over 500 papers and publications, and received multiple highly coveted awards including the Clunies Ross Technology Innovation Award, Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, 2024; Co-Recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, 2023; and the Eureka Prize for Environmental Research, 2018.
Professor Blakers was ANU Node Director, Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics, Australian Renewable Energy Agency, 2013-2023 and is currently an esteemed member of ACAP.
