ACAP partner The Australian PV Institute launches study on local PV manufacturing opportunities

Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, speaks with the APVI's Muriel Watt

Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, today announced the strategic importance of the Australian PV Institute's on-going investigations into establishing local solar PV manufacturing opportunities, which would decrease Australian reliance on global supply chain materials in a timely, viable and relevant manner, in order to enhance our energy security and create job opportunities in the local sector.

The new 'Economic opportunities from silicon to solar' program with the APVI will examine manufacturing opportunities across the solar PV supply chain in Australia from polysilicon, through wafers, cells and modules.

The focus will be on providing Australia with a greater degree of control over the supply of solar PV technology than is currently the case. Opportunities for working with other jurisdictions to secure a diversified PV supply chain will also be discussed.

The APVI welcomes all interested industry partners and stakeholders who would like to collaborate on this work to please contact Dr Michelle Vaqueiro Contreras, where details of the project will be provided in confidence.

The project seeks to make an informed policy submission to the Federal Government by October this year, and we look forward to hearing from you on joining this exciting phase of Australia's transition to renewable energy!
